A partnership between Hull City Council and smart city specialist Connexin has optimised waste collection from Public Waste Bins across the city.

The city of Hull, also known as the slightly more grandiose Kingston upon Hull, is a port city located in the heart of England’s Northern Powerhouse.

The city attracted the title of UK city of culture 2017 and was assigned £32.8m for cultural events and to improve the city’s’ public spaces.

Electricity North West needed a solution that could use its existing cable infrastructure of 11,000km wherever possible.

Electricity North West (ENW) connects more than five million people to the National Grid via a distribution network that covers a diverse range of terrain, from isolated farms in rural Cumbria, to areas of heavy industry and urban populations such as Manchester. 

As part of its aim to maximise supply quality and minimise lost minutes, the company monitors and controls its 500 primary substations via a central SCADA system connected to a data comms network.

But the existing data network was based on copper cabling and a very large VF serial-based solution which offered limited bandwidth, no redundancy, and insufficient resilience.

Off-shore wind farms provide an attractive location option for generating power, especially in the stormy North Seas off the UK’s east coast.

But they are also complex and challenging for construction and cabling installation projects. Weather and high voltage carry significant risk factors and contractors need to be wary when working on such projects. 

One example here is provided by Twistnet Communications which worked with a North Sea wind farm.

It was called to provide testing and certification services that required a technician to bi-directionally test links inside a high voltage electrical substation where all the communication and electrical cabling come together from the wind turbines in an onshore facility.

The company launched in September 2015 after being setup from scratch with limited resources in a vacant city centre council office.

Nearly all the fledgling’s business would be conducted over the phone or internet, and so it needed technology guidance that would power its business. A contact centre would form the heart of the new company. It had to be quick to implement with the scalability to meet demand as business grew.

RTUs (remote terminal units) installed at the substations transmit voltages, current, switch states, transformer temperatures and alarm data from connected sensors and equipment.

VWS Westgarth wanted an IT solution to help get closer to its customers, and to give them outstanding levels of service. When a series of network outages threatened to damage its reputation, Virgin Media Business was brought in to provide a more secure and resilient network solution. With a new super-fast network in place, the firm is working smarter and has boosted its customer service levels.

Headquartered in Scotland, VWS Westgarth works closely with its customers to design and build water treatment facilities for off-shore oil and gas platforms. Down time caused by network outages is bad news for any business, but for VWS Westgarth, constant customer contact is essential. Planning build and design details are sent back and forth for input and customer sign-off on a daily basis. But without a reliable internet connection this was becoming impossible, and the business lost nearly 150 hours in a single year with its old BT solution.

Yorkshire Water required a flexible data centre facility with initial  technical load of 150kW expandable to 350kW. A key element of the  design was efficiency to meet both environmental and financial  objectives.

The first phase consists of 6 EcoCooling CRECs each providing air up to 30kW of  cooling. During cool conditions incoming air is warmed by mixing the hot exhaust  air with the cold air from outside. In warm conditions full fresh air is used and in very hot conditions evaporative  cooling is enabled. The maximum relative humidity is  controlled using the unique EcoCooling dynamic RH control. The input air will  not exceed 80% giving full compliance against ASHRAE allowable standards.

In  2006, it exceeded the $1 billion revenue threshold. It now has operations in  24 countries across the globe with a focus on African oil interests. In 2011, the company  produced 78,200 barrels of oil equivalent per day and it currently employs over 1,500  people.
