How Scotland’s most populous city became one of the world’s smartest

Before its digital upgrade Glasgow City Council already had existing contracts in place providing CCTV traffic management camera network services across the city. Both were due to expire and needed to be replaced to ensure these critical services continued to operate efficiently.

A strategic decision was made that both components should be brought together and delivered through a single supplier.

Loibl Förderanlagen GmbH from Straubing in Germany, is a world-wide leading manufacturer and seller of solutions for transporting bulk material.

From single components to complex systems, Loibl regularly modernises all areas of its operations. And in 2018 this included upgrading laser, plasma, and gas cutting system controls, as up until then, industrial PCs with older operating systems served this purpose.

In order to future-proof and upgrade efficiently, Loibl decided to virtualise its control units. Its current process entailed a Messer Group GmbH steel cut machine transmitting the control commands to the cutting machine. The control units transmitted the commands via RS-232 interface, with the control unit and cutting machine communicating by means of a serial interface.

London has the oldest Metro system in the world and TfL wanted to introduce Wi-Fi on its network to improve customer experience for the millions of people who use it every day.

It was therefore the ideal choice to design and manage the deployment of Wi-Fi access across the Underground network. Fujitsu worked with partners Installation Technology to design and install a solution for ubiquitous access, Virgin Media to provide high capacity Wide Area Network connectivity, and Cisco to supply network access points compliant with the Underground environment.

The Metropolitan Police Service selected Sepura’s SC2 Series of TETRA terminals to replace their existing fleet in an agreement forming one of the largest single orders ever received by the UK-based TETRA specialist manufacturer.

This decision was taken after an extensive trial with the devices across numerous sites with varied teams within the force.

Trial users reported back their strong preference for Sepura SC2 terminals over other suppliers, with positive feedback based around improved performance where coverage was poor and the ease of access to emergency call buttons.

The North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (NEAS) operates across Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Darlington and Teesside.

It provides emergency care services to respond to 999 calls and a Patient Transport Service (PTS) for pre-planned non-emergency transport to help patients in the region.

A team of five IT systems senior analysts at NEAS manage 900 endpoints at multiple sites across the northeast of the UK, from the Scottish borders to North Yorkshire.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service (DFRS) covers a service area of 1,000 square miles, which includes a variety of urban and rural communities, with a population of around one million people.

Its operational area includes the Peak District National Park, underground caverns and historical sites such as Chatsworth House and Bolsover Castle.

The service operates and maintains 31 fire stations, four area offices and has a joint police and fire headquarters in Ripley, Derbyshire.
